When should I choose sea transport and what are the advantages?
The sea transport service enables import and export shipping aboard cargo vessels to and from sea ports around the world.
Sea transport is used when the costs of shipping are of concern or when oversize loads need to be delivered. The largest container ports and giant container ships enable multiple load units to be carried on a large scale.
Why choose sea transport?
It is the most popular mode of transport which enables the most long-distance connections globally, with the largest and most developed infrastructure to handle shipping of cargo. Sea transport is cheaper than rail or air.
Sea transport is very versatile, and virtually anything can be shipped in containers: machines, consumer electronics, industrial goods, food, bulk cargo, and even liquids in special Flexitanks.
Advantages of sea transport:
Low costs: shipping cargo by sea is cheaper than what other modes of transport may provide.
Long-haul: sea transport is international and intercontinental transport with easy access to every continent, be it Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North America, South America, or Central America.
Unrestricted types of goods: sea transport is very flexible in accommodating cargo hazard classifications.
There are no restrictions on size or weight.
Sea freight: how are the prices calculated?
The cost of shipping depends on a number of drivers, including:
Distance from the port of loading to the port of unloading;
Terms of delivery terms (Incoterms);
Type of shipping container, conditions required by the cargo, weight and size of the cargo (e.g. goods which require special containers and oversize loads are more expensive to ship, with their costs of sea freight, terminal handling, and road transport being much higher than for standard loads).
Remember that the total cost of goods imported or exported does not stop at the sea freight charges; there are costs of insurance and customs clearance, plus tax and customs duties.
